When is the Best Time to Paint Your Home’s Exterior in Tennessee?

The best time for exterior painting in TN is usually early fall, from September through October, with late spring a close second. Those months bring mild days, nights well above freezing and drier weeks than early spring. In West Tennessee, September is the driest month on record normals, which gives paint the dry time it needs.

A good painting day is one where the surface is dry, the temperature sits inside the paint’s label range, and the coating has several hours to dry before dew or rain arrives. Season matters, but each day still has to pass that test.

We use a four point check we call the Paint Day Test. A day qualifies only if it meets all four:

Each item comes from manufacturer guidance. Benjamin Moore calls painting on a surface more than 5 ºF above the dew point the industry standard. Sherwin-Williams says Most products require at least 4 hours of dry time before moisture can settle on the surface and that conditions should stay above the dew point for at least 48 hours after application.

September and October are the most reliable months in the Memphis area, followed by May. April is often warm enough but is the wettest month, so expect more rain delays.

NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for Memphis International Airport show September as the driest month at 3.03 inches of precipitation, with an average high of 86.0°F. October averages a high of 75.1°F and a low of 54.0°F, with 3.98 inches of precipitation, close to ideal for most exterior coatings.

Spring is workable but less predictable. April is the wettest month at 5.87 inches, with highs around 73°F. May warms to an average high of 81.7°F and a low of 62.4°F, and rainfall drops to 5.27 inches, so late May often offers longer dry stretches than April.

These are Memphis figures, but the pattern holds broadly across West Tennessee towns such as Arlington, Lakeland and Millington. Exterior painting in TN farther east, at higher elevations, can run on a slightly shorter season.

If your schedule is flexible, aim for a September or October start and collect estimates in midsummer. That gives you time to compare bids, settle colors and clear any HOA review before the driest weeks arrive, instead of making those decisions in a rush once fall has already started.

Many current premium exterior paints can be applied from about 35°F up to around 100°F, but the exact range is on each product’s label. Older or basic formulas often need warmer temperatures.

Benjamin Moore recommends planning projects for temperatures ranging from 35ºF to 100ºF and when humidity is as low as possible, and names 77ºF as the optimal painting temperature. Sherwin-Williams says Duration, Resilience, SuperPaint and A-100 Exterior allow painting down to 35°F.

Heat has limits too. Sherwin-Williams warns that “Extremely high temperatures (over 100° F) could cause a paint film to dry before it had a chance to properly adhere.” Remember that a dark wall in direct sun can run much hotter than the air.

Check every product in the system, not just the topcoat. Primers, caulks and stains each have their own limits. For exterior stains, Sherwin-Williams describes a “safe range” that spans from 50° F to 90° F, which is narrower than many modern paints. The tightest limit in the system sets the rules for the day.

Yes, with care. Summer painting works when crews start early, follow the shade around the house and stop before afternoon heat bakes sunny walls.

The challenge is real. Memphis averages about 72 days a year at or above 90°F, and July highs average 91.9°F with lows of 73.6°F. Warm, humid nights mean shaded walls may stay damp into the morning, while sunny walls heat up fast by midday.

Benjamin Moore’s advice is to “begin on the side of the house that will remain in the shade until you finish,” because direct sun can make paint dry too quickly and cause lap marks and blistering. A good summer plan moves around the house with the sun rather than against it.

Expect shorter painting hours and more pauses for afternoon storms. That can stretch the calendar, but it protects the finish, which matters more than a fast finish date.

For many families, summer exterior painting in TN is about convenience: the days are long and schedules are looser. That works, as long as the crew uses the early hours and everyone accepts that some afternoons will be lost to heat or storms.

Sometimes. On mild winter days with low temperature rated paint, exterior work is possible, but freezing nights and short daylight make it risky.

Memphis normals show January highs of 50.9°F and lows of 33.3°F, and about 44 nights a year at or below freezing. Even when the afternoon is warm enough, the Paint Day Test asks for 48 hours above the dew point, and a freeze the next night can spoil a fresh coat.

Dew is the hidden problem in cool weather. A Purdue Extension bulletin written with the USDA Forest Products Laboratory advises that paint should not be applied in the evenings of cool spring and fall days when heavy dews form before the surface of the paint has thoroughly dried. In winter, that window closes even earlier.

Winter is still useful time for an exterior project. Walk the house, photograph problem areas, collect estimates and settle colors, so the job is ready to start as soon as spring conditions pass the Paint Day Test.

Plan for at least 4 hours of dry weather after each coat, and longer in cool or humid conditions. Before painting, surfaces must also be fully dry from any earlier rain.

Sherwin-Williams notes that most products require at least 4 hours of dry time before moisture settles. After a storm, it advises waiting “a MINIMUM of one day after a heavy rain,” and checking that the surface is dry. Benjamin Moore puts it plainly: “A fully dry substrate is imperative.”

In practice, a painter in West Tennessee watches the hourly forecast, not just the daily one. A chance of a late afternoon storm might mean painting the sunny side in the morning and leaving the rest for the next day.
