Sherwin-Williams vs. Benjamin Moore: Which is Best for Tennessee Humidity?

In the Sherwin-Williams vs. Benjamin Moore debate for humid West Tennessee, neither brand’s top exterior line has a clear, published edge over the other. Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior and Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior list the same 35°F minimum, both claim a mildew resistant film, and both carry a limited lifetime warranty. Prep, timing and application decide more than the label does.

An exterior acrylic latex is a water based paint whose binder is acrylic resin. Both flagship products use a 100% acrylic binder, according to their data sheets, so they start from the same family of chemistry.

Humidity is the right thing to worry about here. Memphis averages 80% relative humidity in the early morning and 53% in mid afternoon across the year, based on 1961 to 1990 averages compiled by Current Results.

High humidity slows the evaporation of water from latex paint, so the film stays soft longer and takes longer to reach full performance. Both manufacturers say so in writing.

Benjamin Moore’s Aura Exterior data sheet lists 1 hour to touch and 4 hours to recoat at 77°F and 50% relative humidity, then adds that “High humidity and cool temperatures will result in longer dry, recoat and service times.” Sherwin-Williams’ Emerald Exterior data sheet lists 1 hour to touch and 4 hours to recoat above 45°F at 50% relative humidity, and says drying and recoat times depend on temperature, humidity and film thickness.

Notice that both lab figures assume 50% humidity. A typical Memphis morning sits well above that, so real world dry times run longer than the label suggests. Siding also cools quickly once the sun drops, so a wall that felt dry at 3 p.m. can be wet with dew by early evening, and paint that has not set by then is exposed.

Dew is the other risk. Sherwin-Williams tells painters to confirm that air, surface and material temperatures are at least 5° above the dew point, and to avoid painting if rain or snow is expected within 2 to 3 hours. Comparing Sherwin-Williams vs. Benjamin Moore is easier when the numbers sit next to each other. On the specifications that matter most in humid weather, the two products are closer than most marketing suggests. Here is what each manufacturer states for its satin finish.

These are manufacturer statements based on properly prepared surfaces. They show the products sit in the same class. They do not prove that one will outlast the other on your particular house, and neither company publishes a direct comparison with the other.

Both flagship exterior paints carry a limited lifetime warranty, but a paint warranty covers the product, not the labor to put it on. Read the terms before you count on them.

Benjamin Moore’s Aura data sheet spells out its terms. The paint will not blister or peel from properly prepared and primed surfaces, or wear down to expose the previous coat. It runs for as long as you live in the home, is made to the original residential buyer, is non transferable, and does not include the cost of labor. The remedy is equivalent or comparable product, with the original sales receipt.

Sherwin-Williams’ Emerald Exterior product page states that the paint is backed by a limited lifetime warranty and lists resistance to blistering, peeling, fading and dirt pickup, plus a mildew resistant coating. The full warranty wording is on the product label, so ask for it in writing and check how it treats labor and transfer if you may sell.

On paper, the Sherwin-Williams vs. Benjamin Moore warranty comparison is close to a tie. Either way, a manufacturer warranty depends on following label instructions and surface prep. A contractor’s workmanship warranty is a separate promise that covers how the job was done.

Neither manufacturer publishes a head to head mildew test against the other, so there is no honest winner. Both formulate a mildew resistant film, and both insist that existing mildew be removed before painting.

Benjamin Moore’s Aura Exterior product page lists a mildew resistant and mold resistant coating, and the data sheet reports a pass with no growth on ASTM D3273 and D3274. Sherwin-Williams says Emerald “contains agents which inhibit the growth of mildew on the surface of this coating film.”

Prep matters more than the additive. Sherwin-Williams puts it plainly: “Mildew must be removed before painting, or it will grow through any new coat of paint.” Benjamin Moore likewise says surfaces must be clean, dry and free of mildew, chalk and loose paint.

In practice, watch north facing walls, walls shaded by mature trees, and spots near sprinklers. Those areas stay damp longest after an 80% humidity morning. Homeowners with shaded lots in Germantown and Collierville see this often.

For most homes, no. Sherwin-Williams’ own data sheet says that “Most coating failures are due to inadequate surface preparation or application.”

That is why the Sherwin-Williams vs. Benjamin Moore choice matters less than who prepares the surface and when. Good prep in this climate means washing off dirt and chalk, killing and rinsing mildew, scraping and sanding loose or glossy paint, priming bare wood, and caulking open joints. Then the paint has to go on at the right temperature, out of direct sun, at the film thickness the data sheet calls for.

Older homes add one more step. Both data sheets warn that scraping or sanding old paint may release lead dust, and the EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in homes built before 1978 to be certified. Ask about lead safe practices if your house predates that year.
